A simple alternative to Matomo

Matomo can do almost everything. If all you really want to know is how many visitors come and where from, one page with the key numbers is enough. No server of your own, and cookieless by default.

Matomo is good, but often more than you need

Matomo is a strong alternative to Google Analytics. It is open source, you can host it yourself, and it has features that otherwise only big tools have.

For many small websites, that is too much:

  • Many reports and menus. The numbers you look at every week are spread across several pages.
  • A server of your own, if you self-host. You need PHP and a database, you install updates and you take care of backups.
  • Cookies in the default setting. You can switch that off, but you have to remember to.

Most people just want to know: How many people were there, where did they come from, and what did they look at?

What Lienks does differently

Everything on one page

Visitors, pages, sources, campaigns and events are in one dashboard. You do not have to click through menus.

No server to maintain

Lienks runs on my side. You add one script and you are done. Updates, backups and the database are my job.

Cookieless by default

In its default mode, Lienks stores nothing on your visitors' devices. I explain how this works on the Cookieless Web Analytics page.

Unlimited websites

Every plan lets you add as many websites as you want. All analytics data is stored on Hetzner servers in Germany.

What you see in Lienks

  • pageviews, visitors and sessions, compared to the previous period
  • top pages, entry pages and exit pages
  • sources, so whether your visitors come from Google, social networks or other websites
  • campaigns via UTM parameters
  • custom events, for example submitted forms or clicks on a button
  • countries, browsers, devices and operating systems

To be honest

Lienks is not the right choice for everyone. You are better off staying with Matomo if:

  • you need heatmaps, session replays or A/B tests,
  • you use funnels, visitor profiles or custom reports,
  • the data absolutely has to be on your own server,
  • you do not want to pay anything and you enjoy taking care of a server.

Lienks is worth it if you want to see the key numbers quickly, have several websites and do not want to maintain a server.

Switch in three steps

  1. Create an account and add your website
  2. Add the Lienks script to the <head> of your site
    <script defer src="https://app.lienks.com/a.js" data-site="YOUR-SITE-ID"></script>
  3. Remove the Matomo script, or run both side by side for a while and compare the numbers

Your existing Matomo data is not imported. Lienks starts counting from the moment you add the script. If you host Matomo yourself, you can simply keep the old installation running to look at the old numbers later.
